In 1991, a small restaurant at Veterans Drive, Lahug became a hit of Cebu. The news spread like wildfire, “For great food, try Cafe Laguna” And sure enough, everyone went for a taste and came back for more.

Café Laguna began as a labour of love for the Urbina Family. Coming from a long line of fine cooks, Lita Urbina decided to share her culinary talents with everyone. With the help and encouragement of her family, she started Café Laguna and served Filipino food with distinctive taste incomparable to this day. Food that not only was good but which brought memories of home cooked meals shared with friends and family.

Now, Café Laguna is a landmark for wholesome and delicious Filipino cuisine. From humble beginnings, the expertise of Lita Urbina and her staff have touched the lives of so many Cebuanos through the restaurant and catering service. Proving, once and for all, that the best way to anyone’s heart is through delicious cooking.

TAOIST’S TEMPLE
Dona Modesta Singson Gaisano, Cebu City

History:

Built in 1972, the Cebu Taoist Temple is located in Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City, Philippines. The temple was built by Cebu’s substantial Chinese community. With an elevation of 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level, the temple is a towering, multi-tiered, multi-hued attraction accessible by three separate winding routes.

Unlike the neighboring Phu Sian Temple, the Taoist temple is open to the worshipers and non-worshipers alike. A ritual among devotees is where one prays to the gods to grant one’s wish. The ritual includes washing of hands, going inside the chapel barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood. If the blocks of wood are both face up then one could make a wish. If not then it is not yet the time for one’s wish to be granted and one has to come to the temple some other time.

The temple is the center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Zi. Another ritual among Taoist devotees, which is done during Wednesdays and Sundays, is the climbing of its 81 steps (representing the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures) to light joss sticks and have their fortune read by the monks.

Some guide books and travel agencies offer trips to the temple or as a side-trip in a tour around Cebu City. But it is more popular with grade school students. No student who grew up in Cebu City or the neighboring Mandaue City has not gone to the temple in any one of their field trips.

The entrance to the temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The temple includes a chapel, a library, a souvenir shop and a wishing well. The spacious balconies offer a scenic view of the downtown Cebu.

CROWN REGENCY SKY ADVENTURE
Crown Regency Hotel and Towers, Fuente Towers, Osmeña Blvd, Cebu City, 6000 Cebu

(032) 418 8888

A majestic view of uptown Cebu City satiates the eyes at the 40-storey hotel tower, the Crown Regency Hotel and Towers.

From the top of the tower, you can overlook the beautiful view of Cebu City, most of all, one of the famous rotundas in Cebu, the Fuente Osmeña Circle which is also known for its magnificent fountain.

From here, you can see how Fuente Osmeña Circle looks like. It is shaped like Banduria(a stringed musical instrument of the lute family, with a design derived from the cittern and guitar) since Cebu is famous for guitar. Amazing, huh? But if you wanna see what it looks like, you don’t really have to go here, you can also see it in the right portion of the 50 peso Philippine currency bill.

Aside from hotel room accommodations, they also offer an amusement which can be one of the reasons Cebu is one of the top destinations in the Philippines and can be another reason for you to visit this city.

One of the must-tries in Cebu is the Crown Regency Sky Experience Adventure. It’s a little bit expensive, though.

LECHON(Our last stop before going back to Manila)

Cebu is the home of the best lechon makers and purveyors of the Philippines. In every grand occasion, the star and the center piece of Filipino buffets is lechon. The word “lechon” came from the Spanish term that refers to a roasted suckling pig. Lechon is a skewered whole pig roasted over charcoal, a popular dish in the Philippines.

Of course, we cannot leave Cebu without trying out one of its pride which is one of the tastiest lechon in the Philippines.

This one’s spicy lechon. It really tastes good.

In Manila, the famous dip for lechon is sarsa. But in Cebu, most commonly, lechon is dipped in soy sauce or vinegar with calamansi and chili.

You can eat it with Puso or hanging rice. The puso or hanging rice is a distinctive food product originating from the province of Cebu and a local version of the Ketupat or rice dumpling found in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore. It is rice wrapped and boiled in a triangular casing made of woven coconut leaves.

MACTAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT(Going back to Manila)

Our Cebu adventure ended up here and we are finally going back to Manila. We were so exhausted but surely had great experiences in Cebu and so much fun.
